VIDEO: Ty Montgomery Makes Extraordinarily Bold Take That Jets Can Compete With Patriots

It's the start of training camp, which means it's the beginning of bravado season. Every summer brings out the most confident statements from players who feel their team is ready to compete for the Super Bowl, and while in some cases those statements come true, most of them end up simply being fodder for false hope. The most recent player with a boldly confident take is new Jets running back Ty Montgomery, who believes New York can run with the big boys and take down the New England Patriots.

Montgomery's claims aren't exactly surprising, though they are outlandish. Every player should be confident in his team's abilities, even if that confidence reaches a slightly unrealistic place.

The Jets actually are a much-improved team this season. They added stars in Le'Veon Bell and CJ Mosley, valuable starters in Jamison Crowder, Kelechi Osemele, and Brian Poole, and a super-talented rookie in Quinnen Williams. Plus, they entirely revamped their front office and coaching staff.

Still, though, no one should expect them to compete with the juggernaut in New England, who may well continue winning AFC East titles until the end of time. The Jets are relying on a 22-year-old quarterback in Sam Darnold, an unproven head coach in Adam Gase, and a roster that has gaping holes at center, cornerback, and edge rusher.

So, Jets fans, feel free to get excited about your new and improved team, but let's temper those expectations. Montgomery is free to believe in his club, but deep down, even he knows the Patriots are still the kings of the AFC.
