VIDEO: 'Unwanted' RB Duke Johnson Doubles Down on Trade Request to the Browns
By Brendan Azoff
After the Browns went out and signed Kareem Hunt, adding him to a backfield that already features Nick Chubb, running back Duke Johnson requested a trade back in April. The Browns' backfield member doubled down on that request when asked by reporters about it at the team's mini-camp on Tuesday.
The Browns' offseason acquisitions will eat into the role Johnson had carved out for himself, a role that had already decreased last season. With the incoming offensive assets, Johnson felt the team was preparing for life without him, and he requested a trade to reflect his feeling of being 'unwanted.'
After skipping OTA's, mandatory mini camp was Johnson's first showing for Cleveland during their training camp. It looks as if he plans to keep his head down and play football while he awaits his potential trade, as unlike a handful of discontent players across the league, Johnson is present at the facility.
Johnson had 201 rushing yards and zero rushing touchdowns last season, while catching 47 passes for 429 yards and three touchdowns, showing that he does have tremendous versatility. Those numbers are down across the board from 2017, when he had four rushing touchdowns on 348 yards, and three receiving touchdowns to go with 74 receptions and 693 yards.
The running back went on to tell reporters that he was put on the trade block one month before he even requested a trade, and that his request to be dealt was made so he could try to meet GM Jim Dorsey on a middle ground.
In the end, Johnson will likely get traded, whether it be before the season or ahead of the trade deadline. He has solid upside, particularly as a pass-catcher, and will provide good depth for any team in the backfield.
