VIDEO: Watch Hawk Harrelson Learn He's Won Frick Award and Made Baseball Hall of Fame
By Chris Russo
The voice of Chicago's South Side is going to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Ken "Hawk" Harrelson is the recipient of the 2020 Ford C. Frick Award, and he found out in grand fashion with a classic call from the Hall on Wednesday morning.
Harrelson was humble in receiving the call to the Hall this week, and he will be honored in Cooperstown next July.
"Hawk" started out as a player in the MLB for nine seasons with the Kansas City A's, Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox, and Cleveland Indians. He then spent nearly a decade calling games for the Red Sox before being the White Sox play-by-play man for over 35 years.
Harrelson was actually the White Sox general manager for one year before departing to call games for the New York Yankees, as well as appear on national broadcasts. He then returned to the White Sox, and garnered a championship ring from the team's 2005 crown, their first in 88 years, before retiring after the 2018 season. Harrelson also famously called Mark Buehrle's perfect game in 2009, putting his signature stamp on things.
Though heavily criticized by opposing fans for his own biases and criticism of umpires, including Joe West and Angel Hernandez, Harrelson has been a figure of White Sox baseball and the city of Chicago for well over a quarter-century.
We can't wait to see what he brings to the Hall.
