VIDEO: Weird Jacob deGrom Error Gives Nationals 3 Runs in Wacky 1st Inning
By Jerry Trotta
The New York Mets have been no strangers to adversity amidst their improbable 15-1 stretch, but Sunday's series finale against the Nationals got off to a genuinely bizarre start. With two outs and the bases loaded in the first inning, Asdrubal Cabrera hit a grounder between first and second, on which Pete Alonso made a tremendous diving stop. The rookie phenom proceeded to lead Jacob deGrom to the first base bag on the throw, but the reigning NL Cy Young hesitated and botched the toss. With no cover behind the bag, three runs came across to score as deGrom had to fetch the ball on his own.
There's no doubt about it, folks -- deGrom's brief pause was just enough to guide the ball off his glove and beyond his reach. Normally a clean fielder, the three-time All-Star dug himself his own whole in this one.
Despite Alonso's best efforts in the infield, the play didn't result in the inning-ending out he was hoping for, and instead, the Mets find themselves facing an early deficit.
