This Vikings-Redskins Trade for Trent Williams Could Actually Work

During a recent meeting with head coach Ron Rivera, Washington Redskins disgruntled left tackle Trent Williams made it abundantly clear that he'd like to be traded. This obviously isn't the first instance in the last few months that the seven-time Pro Bowler has made those intentions known.

In sum, the relationship between Williams and the Redskins is unsalvageable. Some NFL teams are likely holding out in hope that Washington will cut the 31-year-old vet, but it's quite evident that the franchise is keen on getting something in return for this prolonged, albeit self-induced, headache.

The Minnesota Vikings fill the bill as one of the potential suitors for Williams. There's only question that needs to be asked here, however: can the franchise afford him?

The Redskins were previously adamant in their belief that they could get significant draft compensation for Williams, but at this point they clearly don't have that leverage.

With Minnesota looking to restore some cap space, the team could include current LT Riley Reiff, who comes with a projected $13.2 million cap hit, in the deal. Trading him would save the Vikings almost $9 million. Williams' cap hit in 2020 is $14.5 million, so the Redskins could free up $5 million in space here and maybe ask for a third- or fourth-round pick.

Either that, or Minny could add safety Anthony Harris, who will make $11.4 million on the franchise tag in 2020. That'd give the chance for the Redskins to have him play alongside Landon Collins and perhaps convince him to sign a contract extension in Washington.

Both of these are advantageous for both sides. The Vikings can get themselves a star tackle and offload some salary to make room for him. On the flip side, the Redskins can get their hands on a possible replacement for Williams plus a draft asset, or they can bolster their secondary with a stud like Harris.

Seriously, who says no?
