Vikings Trading for Trent Williams Could Save Their Disastrous Offseason
By Jerry Trotta
Minnesota Vikings supporters haven't had much to be excited about this offseason. The franchise is desperately attempting to recoup as much cap space as possible, and that has forced the Vikings to part ways with key contributors like Stefon Diggs, Everson Griffen, Xavier Rhodes and Linval Joseph.
Luckily for general manager Rick Spielman, there's one swift move that he could make to save Minnesota's disastrous offseason (with the exception of signing Kirk Cousins to an extension): trade for Washington Redskins star left tackle Trent Williams.
The Vikings have approximately $13.1 million cap space remaining, therefore they'd have to trade or cut players to create some leeway considering Williams will be looking for a fresh contract extension on top of his $14.5 million cap hit in 2020.
Minnesota has done nothing to bolster the offensive weaponry surrounding Kirk Cousins, so why not give the the newly-extended quarterback some more protection? There'd be a lot of kinks to work out in a potential trade for Williams, but including offensive lineman Riley Reiff and his $13.2 million cap hit in the deal is a must.
Nothing else has worked out so far this offseason. Trading for one of the NFL's best left tackles who is itching to get back on the field would go a long way to saving what has been an incredibly underwhelming month for the Vikes.
