3 Vikings Veterans Who Could Be Fighting for Their Jobs After NFL Draft
By Jerry Trotta
The Minnesota Vikings didn't exactly grab headlines during the 2020 NFL Draft. However, by all accounts, general manager Rick Spielman and head coach Mike Zimmer did a sound job. They got tremendous value with their two first-sound selections -- LSU wide receiver Justin Jefferson and TCU cornerback Jeff Gladney.
Minnesota followed that up with more upside picks in the middle rounds, and odds suggests that the franchise is probable to hit on a couple of their whopping 11 picks on Day 3.
The way you know a team drafted well is if its selections present future roster conundrums. That's exactly what the Vikings did over the three-day event.
3. Ifeadi Odenigbo
The likely departure of star defensive end Everson Griffen opened the door for Odenigbo to get some serious run in his fourth season as a pro. Then, however, the Draft happened, and in it the Vikings drafted South Carolina defensive end DJ Wonnum (fourth round). If the former Gamecock impresses early on, Odenigbo could be demoted to the practice squad.
2. Holton Hill
The Vikings absolutely loaded up on cornerbacks in this year's Draft. By the time the seventh round concluded, the team nabbed three players at the position. Gladney and Cameron Dantzler (No. 89 overall) figure to slot in as the second and third CBs on Minnesota's depth chart next season. That will leave Hill, who appeared in just eight games (one start) in 2019, fighting for his job once preseason camp gets underway.
1. Rashod Hill
Already penciled in as a reserve on the Vikings offensive line, Hill's security on the roster became all the more cloudy following Minnesota's selection of Boise State offensive tackle Ezra Cleveland in the second round (No. 58 overall). The former Bronco has the talent to make a case to start as a rookie. On top of that, Hill was already out of favor on the Vikings, as he played just 15% of the offensive snaps in 2019.
