Washington NFL Team Got Destroyed on Twitter After Posting Tone-Deaf 'Blackout Tuesday' Tweet
By Emily Adams
Whoever is running the Washington NFL team's social accounts might want to take a vacation after posting for #BlackOutTuesday, a movement mean to promote racial justice content on social media... with a racial slur as their username.
Seriously, you can't make this stuff up.
The team has been criticized repeatedly over the past decade for continuing to use their nickname, which is a derogatory term for Native Americans. They use Native American imagery in their logo, and fans have historically worn mock Native American garb, including headdresses, as if it was official team gear
It didn't take long for Twitter to go off about the hypocrisy of the team making a post related to racial justice.
Among the over 4,000 replies to the tweet as of this writing, users called out the team's continued use of the racist nickname, suggested that they should change their name if they wanted to show true solidarity.
Some provided links to donate to racial justice organizations in the Washington, DC area. The team might believe that black lives matter, but they definitely don't seem to care about Native American lives all that authentically, do they?
It's obvious that the Washington social media team posted the Tweet as a performative show of support for the black community and not because of any genuine commitment to racial justice.
Owner Daniel Snyder has been completely pigheaded about changing his team's name since at least 2013; perhaps being torn to shreds on the Internet will finally give him the incentive he needs, since caring about indigenous people wasn't a good enough reason.
