By Scott Rogust
Washington Redskins fans received quite the scare after learning that legendary defensive end Dexter Manley had contracted COVID-19 earlier this month. Approximately two weeks later, football fans received an update sure to lift spirits.
On Tuesday, former Redskins running back John Riggins revealed on the "Riggo the Diesel Podcast" that while Manley is still hospitalized, his condition is improving.
As Riggins mentions, Manley didn't have a severe case of COVID-19. He had low oxygen levels, but he didn't need to be put on a ventilator. While this is a good sign, Riggins mentions that Manley's "still got a little ways to go" before he's 100%.
Manley holds a special spot in the hearts of Redskins fans around the world. Washington selected the Oklahoma State defensive end in the fifth round of the 1981 NFL Draft, and the move immediately paid dividends. Through his nine seasons with the team, Manley won two Super Bowls (XVII, XXII) and tallied a franchise record 91 sacks, including a single-season hhigh of 18.5 in 1986.
Hearing that Manley's condition is improving should bring a smile to the face of every single football fan. We wish Manley the best in his recovery, and we can't wait for him to attend Redskins games in the very near future amid what are sure to be some serious ovations from fans.
