Something is Legitimately Wrong With Trevor Lawrence Right Now
By Ryan Flores
Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence entered the 2019 season facing some astronomical expectations.
As a true freshman, Lawrence dominated the field to the tune of 3,280 yards with 30 touchdowns against only four interceptions. Now a sophomore, analysts and fans alike all thought that Lawrence would be on track to crush all sorts of records en route to a Heisman Trophy and what would be a second straight CFP National Championship.
Unfortunately, he's not living up to those expectations. He's now thrown eight interceptions on the year already, with today's mistakes against Louisville standing out as ugly as ever.
Yes, Lawrence has 17 total touchdowns to his name as of this writing, but he has not taken that great leap forward just yet. As a result, Lawrence has effectively taken himself out of the Heisman running, as players like Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, and Joe Burrow have all played significantly better.
While there's a ton of talented quarterbacks out there, it's still safe to say that Lawrence is among the most skilled in the nation. Just because he's not putting together this year doesn't mean that his freshman season was a fluke by any means. If you ask any NFL scout, they'll likely tell you that Lawrence is still the most desirable quarterback coming out of the 2021 draft class. But at the moment, he's throwing up red flags.
At the beginning of the season, it seemed as though Clemson was forcing Lawrence to take on more than any one player should be asked to handle. That's the nature of hype. Every player is subject to growing pains, including a 20-year-old quarterback.
Lawrence needs to see some struggle. It's all part of the maturation proicess. If he's able to learn from his mistakes, there is no doubt that he can be the best college quarterback in the nation. But for now, fans sure would love to see him cut down on these uncharacteristic mistakes.
