White Sox Not Talking Contract Extension With Lucas Giolito for Some Reason
By Parker White
Something that has really caught on with all MLB teams in recent years is the prudent practice of locking up their young players and signing them to long-term deals well before they reach free agency.
Heck, some players get extensions before they ever play an MLB game.
The Chicago White Sox did that with outfielder Eloy Jimenez, who looks like a star, but they haven't done that with one of their studs in the rotation: right-hander Lucas Giolito.
According to Giolito, who spoke with Daryl Can Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times, a long-term extension “hasn’t been talked about at all.”
"I know that’s kind of like the new thing, organizations coming to young players," Giolito said. "But I haven’t thought about it myself, and I don’t know where the White Sox are at, either. Just keep playing, play well, and all that stuff takes care of itself."
After a dreadful 2018 season where Giolito may have been the worst starter in the sport, he's made a complete 180 and could be in the AL Cy Young conversation when it's all said and done.
In 14 starts this season, Giolito owns a 10-2 record with a 2.74 ERA and 1.02 WHIP, while also compiling 104 strikeouts over 85.1 innings.
The former first-round pick isn't a free agent until 2024, so they certainly have time. However, if they think this is the real version of Giolito, they should at least be having a discussion with him about it.
