The Chicago White Sox may have struck out on Manny Machado and Bryce Harper last offseason, but this time around they're making moves in an attempt to contend and add depth.

After signing Yasmani Grandal, trading for Nomar Mazara and re-signing Jose Abreu, Chicago has added both former Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Gio Gonzalez and former Kansas City Royals infielder Cheslor Cuthbert.

You may remember that Gonzalez began his career as a first-round selection by Chicago in 2004, only to be traded as part of a package for Nick Swisher before he could make his MLB debut. The veteran lefty had a great run of success from 2010-2018, winning double digit games in each season, including a 21-win campaign in 2012. Gonzalez was used mostly as a spot starter with Milwaukee last season, but it's likely Chicago uses him as a veteran option in the back of their rotation.

As for Cuthbert, the 27-year-old was a valuable platoon player for the Royals these past few seasons, playing solid defense at both corner infield spots while hitting .250 for Kansas City over a five-year stretch.

While the Nicaraguan former top-prospect was non-tendered by Kansas City earlier this month, the White Sox clearly see some upside in him, judging from the fact that they scooped him up before the New Year.

With these two additions, the White Sox appear well on their way towards reestablishing themselves within the AL Central, assuming they continue this trend of being active in the offseason.
