JR Smith and Dion Waiters Would Do Nothing But Ruin Lakers' Chemistry
By Dylan McCaffrey
After holding steady at the trade deadline, the Los Angeles Lakers are still looking to bolster their roster for their championship push. LA didn't end up signing Darren Collison, who decided against an NBA return, but they did waive Troy Daniels to free up a roster spot.
And right on cue, the team has reportedly scheduled workouts with free agents JR Smith and Dion Waiters. And they should do whatever they can to resist the urge to sign either one of them.
These are the two most erratic players you can pick up off the free agent pile. We all know what JR Smith is -- as enigmatic as NBA players come, and utterly streaky. He's guy who can shoot you into a game or right out of one. He also hasn't played in the league since November 2018.
Maybe the key is the history Smith has with LeBron James? Hmmm. Let's check the tape.
Nope.
Then, we have Dion Waiters, a man who did have himself a couple of productive seasons, and he can handle the ball a little bit, too. But he's been suspended from his teams before, and he's doing things like this during his time off:
A person like this can't be good for the locker room. LA is having a great season, so why bring in these hit-or-miss guys and run the risk of throwing everything out of balance?
It's so wrong.
The Lakers could also choose to keep that roster open for injury insurance. This is probably the smartest and safest route that LA could go. Smith and Waiters will still be there if a true emergency strikes, guys, but there's just no reason to sign one of them now.
