Why the Hell Would the Cowboys Be Considering Urban Meyer as Head Coach?
By Michael Luciano
The Dallas Cowboys could finally pull the plug on Jason Garrett if he fails to live up to expectations yet again, and reportedly have their eyes set on a couple show-stopping names to replace him.
While Josh McDaniels would be an excellent hire for the Cowboys, former Ohio State head coach and current FOX analyst Urban Meyer would be a puzzling choice.
Meyer went 187-32 as a college coach, winning three national championships along the way. No one can doubt his college success, but the pros is a whole different ballgame.
With all the brilliant young coordinators out there in the NFL, including two in-house options in defensive backs coach Kris Richard and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, you're going to hire a college football analyst without any NFL coaching experience?
Jones needs stability and a proven track record in the NFL in some capacity, and hiring Meyer would guarantee you neither of those things.
Jones has had plenty of success hiring coaches straight out of college, as Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer both have Super Bowls to their name, and Meyer arguably more accomplished than both of them at the college level.
However, hires like Nick Saban and Steve Spurrier prove that even the most innovative college minds can struggle out of the college ranks. Jones probably isn't going to give Meyer much time to figure things out on the job, which could prove fatal.
