Willie Cauley-Stein's Contract With the Warriors is an Absolute Bargain
The Warriors continue to fill out their roster in the post-Kevin Durant era, an they've been pretty effective at finding cheap deals on the market.
They recently signed Willie Cauley-Stein, and it's now been revealed that the contract was a bargain. The former Kings big man is due to make $4.4 million over two seasons in Golden State, though he has a player option on the second year.
At first glance, this looks like an absolute steal by the Warriors. But, when examined a bit deeper.... it's still an absolute steal.
Cauley-Stein's deal is essentially a one-year commitment for about the veteran's minimum. The Warriors got a player worth 6.7 win shares last season for next to nothing. For context, Danny Green, who signed a two-year, $30 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers was worth 5.9 win shares last season.
In 81 games for the Kings last season, Cauley-Stein averaged 11.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game with a PER of 18.0, and he's taking his talents to The Bay on a microscopic deal.
If he plays well, he'll likely opt out and test the market once more after the season, but for now the Warriors will enjoy his services at minimal cost.
Essentially, Cauley-Stein had a good season last year, and is being criminally underpaid for it. The Warriors are no longer rebuilding, but rather reloading after the departure of Kevin Durant.
Cauley-Stein should fit right in with D'Angelo Russell and the other new faces in Golden State. If all goes right for Cauley-Stein, he'll be able to opt out in his second season and cash in via free agency.
