Willie Taggart Must Be Fired After Starting 2nd Year at FSU With More of the Same
By Sean Facey
It's a tale as old as time, and Florida State fans are sick of hearing it. The Seminoles suffered a brutal 36-31 defeat at the hands of Boise State thanks to a second-half collapse in which they allowed 17 unanswered points.
This is their second year under Willie Taggart and, unsurprisingly, their second year losing the home opener in embarrassing fashion. When the loss is taken into consideration with last year's massively underwhelming season, it's clear that Taggart has to be fired.
If not now, it's only a matter of time.
The Seminoles weren't expected to be world-beaters by any means last year, but they started the season ranked No. 19 in the nation. That would be the highest rank they'd earn in their abysmal 5-7 campaign.
Saturday's showing was a disaster. Taggart's squad allowed Hank Bachmeier to throw for 407 yards and a touchdown. Things weren't much better on the ground, as the defense allowed 214 yards rushing. And just for good measure, the offense went totally quiet after putting up 31 points in the first half.
Many still held out hope that Taggart could turn things around, but the fact that he started off the 2019 season in the same disappointing fashion leaves no room for debate. This was a surprise home game, with the contest relocated due to the oncoming Hurricane. It was an unexpected noon start for a team coming from the west. And yet the de facto home team was the one to collapse, unable to withstand a series of adjustments and stronger and faster players. Unbelievable.
The Seminoles look nothing like the team that they could be. Taggart is holding them back. If they're going to turn things around, then they're going to have to start by firing him.
