3 Worst Contracts on the Red Sox Right Now
By Jack Murphy
After winning the World Series in 2018, the Boston Red Sox failed to reach the postseason in 2019, and by a wide margin, and the nightmare continued with a payroll shed over the last few months.
In a move to dump money off the books, they traded Mookie Betts and David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers. While this cleared up a lot of money, the Red Sox are still stuck with these three bad contracts.
3. Nathan Eovaldi
Eovaldi was one of the unsung heroes during the Red Sox World Series run in 2018. In reward for his impressive postseason, Boston offered the right-handed pitcher a four-year, $68 million contract. The Red Sox may be regretting their decision after a 2019 campaign in which Eovaldi posted a 5.99 ERA while battling injuries, which limited him to 67 innings. Eovaldi hasn't been anything more than an average fourth starter throughout most of his career, and he's certainly not worth $17 million per year.
2. Dustin Pedroia
Pedroia signed an eight-year, $110 million contract prior to the 2014 season, and it's been nothing short of a nightmare. While he had a great year in 2016, injuries got the better of him pretty much every other campaign. He's played in just 114 games the past THREE years, including just nine over the last two, and he's still owed $25 million total through the 2021 season. The Red Sox would've much preferred to get rid of this contract over Betts' if it were possible.
1. Rusney Castillo
The Boston Red Sox signed outfielder Rusney Castillo to a seven-year, $72.5 million contract in 2014 due to his power and speed. But since signing the deal, Castillo has only played in 99 games with the club. He hasn't appeared in a game with the Red Sox since 2016 and is expected to make over $14 million this year playing in Triple-A! Castillo will make more money in 2019 than players like Aaron Judge, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Juan Soto, to name a few, which is absurd. Luckily for the Red Sox, this awful deal will expire after the 2020 season.
