Worst Free Agent Signings in Eagles History
By Scott Rogust
The new NFL league year is less than a month away. Until the big day, fans will reminisce about past offseason acquisitions from their favorite teams -- preferably the good ones.
As is the case with any team, however, there have been some cases of terrible signings that set an NFL franchise back a couple of years. On paper, the transaction may look good, but the player's performance on the field doesn't always match the amount of zeros on the paycheck. The Philadelphia Eagles are no exception to this.
Here are the worst free agent signings in Eagles franchise history.
4. OL Stacy Andrews
The Eagles looked to add some chemistry on the offensive line in 2009. So, they signed Stacy Andrews, older brother of Shawn, to a six-year, $38 million contract. The move never panned out, as he started just two games that year before head coach Andy Reid pulled the plug on the project. To make matters worse, Andrews was a corresponding signing after safety Brian Dawkins left for the Denver Broncos. Yikes.
3. CB Byron Maxwell
Byron Maxwell played a key role in the Seattle Seahawks' "Legion of Boom." As it turns out, he was just a product of the system. After playing in two consecutive Super Bowls, Maxwell cashed in with the Eagles, who signed him to a six-year, $63 million contract. Maxwell failed to live up to his end of the bargain, as he struggled from the onset of his Eagles tenure and looked outmatched against the opposition. Philadelphia cut bait after one season, when they traded the corner to the Miami Dolphins.
2. RB DeMarco Murray
When Eagles fans remember the disastrous Chip Kelly era, they immediately think of DeMarco Murray. The team traded away running back LeSean McCoy and opted to replace him with Murray, the former Dallas Cowboys running back. As it turns out, Jerry Jones was right to let him walk. The Eagles signed him to a five-year, $40 million contract, and he failed to live up to it. After rushing for over 1,000 yards the previous two years, Murray accumulated a measly 702 yards on the ground in 2015. He was dealt to the Tennessee Titans after just one year in Philly.
1. CB Nnamdi Asomugha
The 2011 season was supposed to be the year of the "Dream Team," which was infamously dubbed by backup quarterback Vince Young. Those hopes were heightened once the Eagles signed former Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to a five-year, $60 million contract. The three-time All-Pro defensive back was a shell of his former self once moving to Philadelphia, and quickly drew the ire of the impatient Eagles fan base. His tenure would last just two dreadful seasons, before flaming out from the league altogether in 2013.
