5 Ugliest On-Field Fights in NFL History
By Parker White
Thursday night's altercation between Cleveland Browns defensive lineman Myles Garrett and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph turned ugly in a real hurry, as Garrett ripped off Rudolph's helmet and proceeded to hit him in the head with it. It's one of the ugliest moments in NFL memory, resulting in Garrett being suspended indefinitely.
However, that wasn't the first time things have gone sideways on an NFL field. With that in mind, here are five of the ugliest on-field fights in NFL history before last night's Steelers-Browns debacle.
5. Corey Webster vs. Santana Moss (2009)
Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss was trying to block on a running play but things escalated fast between he and New York Giants cornerback Corey Webster a decade ago, resulting in Moss' helmet coming off and the two coming to blows on the ground. Both were penalized on the play, so we'll rule it a draw.
4. Joey Porter and William Green's Pre-Game Slugfest (2004)
Last night was not the first time these two division rivals got into it in brutal fashion. Back in 2004 before their game even started, Steelers linebacker Joey Porter and Browns running back Williams Green were seen throwing haymakers at each other while neither were wearing helmets. Porter allegedly spit in Green's face to ignite this major dust-up.
3. Buddy Ryan Punches His Own Houston Assistant, Kevin Gilbride (1993)
It's pretty standard to see opponents getting into a fight, but how many times do you see coaches on the same sideline going off on each other? Houston Oilers offensive coordinator Kevin Gillbride appeared to overhear defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan saying something that wasn't to his liking, so he started walking over to Ryan only to have a fist thrown his way. Nothing escalated from there, so perhaps this isn't a "fight" per se, but the moment still stands out as a stunning one.
2. Andre Johnson and Cortland Finnegan Trade Blows (2010)
Former Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson was pretty reserved most of his career, preferring to let his superstar play do the talking. But on one day in 2010, he had enough of Tennessee Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan, which resulted in Johnson ripping off his opponent's helmet and going to town on him with some serious blows. Obviously, both ended up being ejected, but Johnson certainly got his money's worth.
1. Albert Haynesworth Stomps Andre Gurode (2006)
Outside of what you saw from Myles Garrett last night, you won't see anything as despicable than what Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth did to Dallas Cowboys center Andre Gurode in 2006. The man stepped on his adversary's face without the protection of a helmet, leading to 30 stitches above and below Gurode's right eye. That could've ended his career. Haynesworth received a five-game suspension, which at that time was unprecedented.
