Dumbest Interview Questions Players Have Revealed From the NFL Combine
By Scott Rogust
When thinking about the NFL Scouting Combine, you think of the variety of drills that prospects are subjected to. That's only part one of their duties, however, as these collegiate athletes all meet with interested teams at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis to answer a battery of interview questions.
But these aren't ordinary Q&A sessions. Rather, team executives grill athletes with a mix of hard-hitting questions, hypotheticals, and off-the-wall scenarios. And sometimes, the queries are downright silly.
With that in mind, here are some of the dumbest, most useless questions players have revealed hearing over the years at the NFL Combine.
5. "Would You Rather Be a Cat or Dog?"
This is simple but strange. The Atlanta Falcons met with Western Michigan offensive tackle Willie Beavers in 2016 and asked if he preferred to be a cat or dog. How do you ask this question with a straight face and expect a serious answer? (But the easy answer is dog, of course. Cats are jerks.)
4. "If You Could Kill Someone and Not Get Caught, Would You?"
Former Murray State defensive end Austen Lane was one of the more outspoken players in terms of revealing the stupid questioning by scouts and executives. Imagine going for a normal job interview and you get asked if you would... murder someone if you knew you wouldn't get caught?? If they're trying to catch prospects off-guard, then, hey, mission accomplished.
3. "Where Are You Sitting on the Bus?"
Talk about a complex question. During the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine, Western Kentucky quarterback Brandon Doughty was asked by an anonymous team where he would be sitting on a bus if it was going 100 mph down a mountain. What does this have to do with football? Fun fact: this question also appeared in Madden NFL 20 if you played the "Face of the Franchise" mode. Long story short, there's no easy answer.
2. "Do You Find Your Mother Attractive?"
Why? Just why-oh-why would NFL teams ask a question like this? Did they Oedipus Rex while on a Greek tragedy binge? Lane certainly wasn't subjected to intelligent questions. Maybe this scout want to see if Lane would punch him in the mouth. Either way, this has nothing to do about whether you're a good player or not. It's just uncomfortably strange.
1. "Do You Have Both Your Testicles?"
While all previous questions were idiotic, Texas cornerback Kris Boyd gave us a gem. An NFL team asked the now-Minnesota Viking at last year's Combine if he had both of his testicles. Why would they need to ask that? This is something that would pop up on his medical exams, perhaps, but nothing's going to top this question from a front office type. But hey, maybe the 2020 edition of the NFL Combine will surprise us and bring something even greater.
