WWE Confirms Rob Gronkowski Must Defend 24/7 Title During NFL Games and That's Incredible
By Scott Rogust
Finally ... the "Gronk" ... has come back ......... to the NFL!! Not even two months into his contract with the WWE, tight end Rob Gronkowski has unretired and will play football for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While that's all well and good, wrestling fans were left in a state of confusion. What is Gronkowski going to do with his WWE 24/7 championship?
WWE released a statement on Tuesday to reveal that even though Gronkowski's returning to an NFL gridiron, his title is still up for grabs anytime, anywhere. And yes, that includes the end zone.
THIS is the kind of entertainment the WWE and NFL need to add in for the viewers.
For those of you who don't watch professional wrestling, we'll explain the rules for the 24/7 title. WWE introduced this new championship last year in which wrestlers can compete for it at all hours of the day, at any location. The only rule is that the individual must have a referee by their side to count to three.
Gronkowski happened to win the title at this year's WrestleMania, after jumping off of an elevated platform onto a group of wrestlers.
Gronkowski isn't the first person in the sports world to win this prestigious title. Enes Kanter of the Boston Celtics and NASCAR's Kyle Busch have all claimed the gold, but neither have held it as long as Gronk. Literally, they held the belt for minutes, while Gronkowski held it for weeks.
Just imagine Gronkowski catching an end zone fade from quarterback Tom Brady, only for a wrestler to sneak up and roll him up for a three-count? The chaos would be magnificent.
Kudos to WWE for making NFL football even more exciting than usual.
