3 XFL Stars Packers Should Sign This Offseason
By Brendan Balsamo
The XFL has been surprisingly fun to watch since the NFL season has ended and it's clear we could see some of the players at the next level once free agency begins next week, especially among teams who have little cap space to work with.
Enter the Green Bay Packers, who are in that situation and need a few more contributors on both sides of the ball. Which players should general manager Brian Gutekunst target from the XFL?
3. DT Cavon Walker, New York Guardians
Cavon Walker has been a huge surprise for the New York Guardians this year. A Maryland product who had extremely short stints with the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs is having a resurgence in the XFL by leading the league with 4.5 sacks. For the Packers, no one besides Kenny Clark really makes an impact on that defensive line, which lacks depth as the team was in the bottom half of the league in rushing yards allowed per game. The addition of Walker would be huge for the Packers' pass rush.
2. LB Steven Johnson, Seattle Dragons
The Packers might have some serious issues at the linebacker position next year. Blake Martinez, who will likely leave in free agency, hasn't missed a snap for the team in three years, so the team needs a formidable replacement. Former Denver Broncos linebacker Steven Johnson, who plays for the Seattle Dragons, could be one solution. The University of Kansas product currently leads the XFL with 48 tackles and can hopefully plug a big hole (or provide depth) for the Pack.
1. WR Cam Phillips, Houston Roughnecks
Cam Phillips makes every other wide receiver in the XFL look like a child. He leads the league in multiple offensive categories, and by no small margin. He's tops in receptions by four with 31, receiving yards by 117 with 455, and receiving touchdowns by five with nine. Meanwhile, in Green Bay, the production of the Packer wide receivers seems to be all on the shoulders of Davante Adams. If Phillips can make half the impact he's made in the XFL, he should provide Aaron Rodgers with another reliable target.
