Yankees Acquire Lefty Reliever Joe Mantiply From Reds
By Sam Dunn
The New York Yankees have World Series dreams, but that doesn't mean they're taking their eye off the ball when it comes to bolstering their ranks in the lower levels. With that in mind, they've swooped in and made a deal with the Cincinnati Reds.
Left-handed reliever Joe Mantiply is headed to the Bronx Bombers in exchange for cash considerations. He has been assigned to the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
Who is Joe Mantiply?
Great question! A 28-year-old native of Danville, Virginia, Mantiply was a 48th-round pick by the New York Mets in the 2009 MLB Draft coming out of high school. He opted to attend Virginia Tech instead, and ended up as a 27th-round pick by the Tigers in 2013. He made his MLB debut for Detroit in September of 2016.
Joe Mantiply Career Stats
2016 has proven to be the only year Mantiply logged time in the bigs. He appeared in five games for the Tigers, allowing five earned runs in 2.2 innings. He's walked two and struck out two.
In the minors, Mantiply has been a serviceable operator. He boasts a 2.67 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A across six seasons with a 4.05 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
For whatever reason, the Yankees love this guy, and have forever; he was in the ranks in 2017, and cited as a breakout contender by Brian Cashman.
Expect to see this guy in September.
