Yankees and Mets Reportedly Discussed Jeurys Familia Trade Last Year for Some Sick Reason
By Thomas Carannante
Jeurys Familia's return to Queens went just about as poorly as it could have.
After the New York Mets traded him to the Oakland Athletics in 2018, the right-hander returned to Citi Field on a three-year, $30 million deal and cashed in on his successful campaign the previous season. However, he finished 2019 with a disastrous 5.70 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 66 games. The crazy part is that his first half (7.50 ERA) was much worse than his second half (3.90 ERA) and the New York Yankees were STILL reportedly interested in acquiring him at the trade deadline!
While discussing the failed Zack Wheeler trade between the two clubs, SNY's Andy Martino added, "That came after other intensive discussions between Brian Cashman and Brodie Van Wagenen about other players, too. At one point they were talking about Jeurys Familia."
If Familia couldn't handle pitching in Queens, how in the world would he have been able to deal with the pressure in the Bronx? What could the Mets have possibly gotten in return for an aging reliever with an ERA over 7.00?
Time and time again we hear about the Mets' unwillingness to make a trade with their crosstown "rivals" -- if you want to even call them that -- and THIS is what we get in return? A botched deal for Wheeler and discussions about arguably the worst reliever in baseball.
Thankfully, this never came to fruition and it saved us from seeing one of the worst trades ever between two teams that refuse to do business.
