Yankees Announce Luis Severino is Expected to Make Rehab Start in Scranton on Sunday
By Michael Luciano
As the September playoff push is just a few days away, the starting pitching-needy New York Yankees could be getting a major shot in the arm if their ace can return to the mound.
Luis Severino, who has not pitched an inning in the major leagues this year due to injury, is set to make a rehab start with their Triple-A affiliate in Scranton.
All of a sudden the Yankees not making any moves for starting pitchers at the trade deadline doesn't appear to be as crazy as it once seemed.
He won't be the only young Yankee arm to make a start for the RailRiders. Jordan Montgomery will also pitch a few innings as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery.
Severino made the AL All-Star team in 2017 and 2018, going 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA last year.
No Yankees starter has an ERA lower than Domingo German's 4.03, so Sevy's return to the rotation at anything close to 100% would be a game changer when the playoffs come around.
The 25-year-old ace coming back to arguably the best team in the American League makes the Yankees that much stronger, as they'll finally have a top arm ready to intimidate top opposing offenses.
