Yankees Beat Writer Speculates New York Could Sign Addison Russell to Replace Didi Gregorius
By Chris Pyo
The Chicago Cubs non-tendered shortstop Addison Russell, making him a free agent ahead of what's shaping up to be a wild offseason.
At the same time, Yankee shortstop Didi Gregorius is also hit free agency, and he's anticipated to have a sizable market. However, one Yankees beat writer is suggesting that the Bombers might do something borderline insane: replace Didi with Russell.
Yeah, there's no shot of that happening. That's a ludicrous suggestion by George A. King III of the New York Post.
First off, there are way too many unmitigated risks that come with signing Russell, who was so bad last year that the Cubs actually chose to option him to Triple-A to make room for Willson Contreras' return from injury.
Russell won a championship with the Cubs as their starting shortstop, but otherwise was a non-factor in the lineup, hitting .242 over five years.
Before that, he was suspended for 40 games after allegations of domestic violence were made against him by his ex-wife. The Yankees can't afford to take another risk with a ballplayer with a history of domestic abuse, as they did when they traded for Aroldis Chapman. They're still waiting for a verdict on Domingo German as well.
And regardless of whether Cashman retains Didi's services or not, there's always the possibility that Gleyber Torres could shift over to shortstop and play his career out there.
Worry not Yankee fans, this seems more like a bold take than anything else. Don't expect to see Russell in pinstripes any time soon.
