After standout second-string catcher Austin Romine landed with Detroit this offseason, the New York Yankees turned to veteran Chris Iannetta to compete with Kyle Higashioka for the backup spot behind Gary Sanchez.
With their catching predicament a thing of the past, the Yanks are getting set to report to Spring Training. While the trips for most of the players were smooth sailing, there was one glaring problem with the flight of the team's latest acquisition.
Iannetta took to Twitter on Monday to disclose a picture of his plane, which just so happened to be a Red Sox-branded JetBlue bird.
When your ride to spring training, with the Yankees, shows up... ???. ☹️? I cant find the emoji that properly depicts my thoughts. Maybe ? or maybe just the fact that I’m using this many emojis... speaks volumes. This just feels weird. pic.twitter.com/IxqKvhytgB

Wait, what?
The 36-year-old vet must have been thinking that he was being punk'd, and for good reason. As expected, Iannetta's trusty followers were quick to poke fun at his unforeseen head-scratcher.
Well thats because we own the Red Sox in 2020, Chris.

In all honesty, that might be the case in 2020. Especially after Boston's irrational offloading of Mookie Betts.
I’m sure the plane will cheat and get you there 2 hours early or something

That's the only logical explanation we can come up with. Talk about going for the kill-shot.
Guess the Red Sox are renting it out to earn more $$. Times are tough in Beantown!

It was only a matter of time until Boston's financial constraints, which just so happens to be their rationalization for trading Betts, was referenced. The luxury tax is a harsh mistress. Renting out planes is the new way for professional sports organizations to earn quick cash.
Haven't you heard?
In all seriousness, Iannetta will likely laugh this ordeal off before touching down in Tampa. Still, it would be impossible to deny that his tenure in Pinstripes has gotten off to a forgettable start.
