Yankees Closer Aroldis Chapman Actually Autographed an Astros Trash Can for a Fan
By Scott Rogust
The Houston Astros have become the subjects of relentless memes at their expense this spring. That was to be expected, considering they were proven guilty of stealing signs electronically in 2017, and have shown to be far from sympathetic to the general public. That, in turn, angered their MLB colleagues, with countless jabs sent their way.
On Wednesday, New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman was approached by a fan, who asked him to autograph their "Houston Trashtros" trash can sign. Chapman happily obliged, getting a little swipe in at those who've robbed him once...and maybe twice.
Chapman is no stranger to the Astros epidemic.
Even though Houston was proven of cheating in 2017, opposing clubs have suspected them of cheating in 2019, as well. One of those rivals was the Yankees during the ALCS, who complained of whistling coming from the Astros dugout. The controversy continued, as second baseman Jose Altuve took Chapman deep in Game 6 for the walk-off victory, after which the closer sported a smirk that seemed to say, "I can't believe he knew that pitch was coming."
Chapman spoke out against the Astros at the start of Spring Training, too. First, he clapped back at Houston owner Jim Crane for bizarrely claiming the sign-stealing had no impact on the game. Then, he expressed that he doesn't know if Altuve knew what pitch was coming in Game 6, but did call his desire to not have his jersey ripped off as he rounded the bases "suspicious."
Houston is expected to be heavily retaliated against, with many looking forward to Chapman potentially throwing a beanball Altuve's way. However, fans will have to wait until May 15 (in Houston) for that to happen.
