Here's What a Yankees-DJ LeMahieu Contract Extension Should Look Like
By Jerry Trotta
DJ LeMahieu has previously stated he's open to opening contract extension talks with the New York Yankees. Will something get done?
Of course, LeMahieu signed a two year, $24 million deal with the Pinstripes before a sensational 2019 campaign proved that he was being grossly underpaid -- his $12 million annual salary ranked fourth among all second baseman.
With their stud leadoff hitter entering the final year of his deal, the Yanks had better be chomping at the bit to get a fresh extension signed and sealed.
What Should a DJ LeMahieu Extension Look Like?
In 145 games last season, the 31-year-old LeMahieu slashed .327/.375/.518 with a career-high 26 home runs, 102 RBI and an eye-opening 136 OPS+. He finished fourth in AL MVP voting and earned his first Silver Slugger Award.
Those numbers are staggering and are worth a wealthy extension. In our eyes, New York should offer DJ a contract worth somewhere in the vicinity of $15-$18 million per year. Perhaps a three-year, $48 million deal would work.
The Yankees' salary cap wouldn't be drastically impacted, and LeMahieu would get the promotion he thoroughly deserves. It's a win-win for both parties.
It's fully expected that New York extends LaMahieu. All the organization really has to deliberate here is whether that happens before or after the upcoming season.
