Yankees Drafted Another Red Sox Fan With Their First-Round Pick and They Should Stop Doing That

Wednesday night, the Yankees selected catcher Austin Wells out of the University of Arizona in the first round of the MLB Draft. While it may seem like a good pick on paper, if you dig deeper, there's one big question mark when it comes to the prospect.

When Wells was growing up in Las Vegas, he was a Red Sox fan. What makes this even more painful for Yankees fans is the fact that he chose the Red Sox as a five-year-old after they won the 2004 World Series. While he said that all changed last night, who knows where his true allegiances lie?

Kidding...kind of.

In the past, the Yankees have had success in drafting Red Sox fans, though. Most notably, Aaron Judge was famously spotted in a Sox shirt prior to being drafted by the Yankees in 2013. If Wells can put his previous alliances in the past, like Judge, he will thrive in the Bronx. From his reaction to the Yankees drafting him, it looks like he's ready to don the pinstripes.

Wells came into the draft as the No. 27-ranked prospect in the MLB Pipeline Top 200. He was previously drafted by the Yankees in the 35th round of the 2018 Draft coming out of high school, but opted to go to college and play at the University of Arizona. In 81 games during his time at Arizona, he hit .357 with 74 RBI and 7 home runs.

Wells' first game against the Red Sox will be a surreal experience, and Yankees fans will be excited to see what he can bring to the table when he's ready to make the jump to the majors.
