Yankees Electric Pitching Prospect Deivi Garcia is Reaching Entirely Different Level in 2019

When healthy, right-hander Luis Severino has the moniker as the New York Yankees' ace of their pitching staff. However, the Yankees have another electric pitcher down in the minors who is competing at an elite level this season, and could reach that level someday soon.

20-year-old right-hander Deivi Garcia is dealing at Double-Trenton, and after tossing six shutout innings with 15 strikeouts last week, Garcia followed that up by throwing five no-hit innings with nine strikeouts on Monday.

It was an historic night, as the Trenton Thunder's pitching staff combined for the fifth no-hitter in franchise history, thanks in large part to Garcia's effort.

Garcia began his season at High-A Tampa and ever since he was promoted, he's been lights out, striking out 76 batters over 47 innings in nine starts.

Garcia has shown big time ability ever since he started rookie ball back in 2016, but he's at a whole 'nother level right now. What has helped him get so locked in? Watching clips of Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez (particularly what he did in the 1999 All-Star Game) before every start can certainly help him get pumped, right?

Garcia is a smaller guy just like Pedro Martinez, who he's drawn comparisons to, so it makes a lot of sense that he would model his game after him. He even has a similar demeanor to Martinez.

“Of course, it is his stuff, but it’s also his attitude out there,” Trenton pitching coach Tim Norton told MiLB.com last week. “He feels like he is better than everyone else and that goes a long way, especially when you have elite stuff…I see the mound presence he has and he’s not scared one bit.”

We'll see what the Yankees do to upgrade their pitching to make a World Series run this year, but they have a young starter with a lot of upside knocking on the door right now.

Just show a little more patience and Garcia could be the future for New York.
