VIDEO: Gleyber Torres Sends Inspirational Message to New Yorkers During COVID-19 Pandemic
By Nick Porr
The coronavirus pandemic continues to affect life in the United States and around the world, with major cities like New York serving as epicenters of the outbreak. Friday night, New York Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres shared his support for New Yorkers in this time of crisis, and it's exactly what we need right now.
Since his big league debut, Torres has been a player on the rise for the contending Yankees. Last season, he hit 38 home runs and 90 RBI in his just his second season. Torres will be just 23 years old when the 2020 campaign picks up -- for such a young guy to take on this kind of responsibility in trying times is truly encouraging stuff.
The 2020 MLB season is currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but is rumored to be eyeing a return perhaps in late June. On March 26th, the day that would've been the Yankees' Opening Day, Torres tweeted out a message to fans.
In times of crisis, sports like baseball are an escape from the stresses of life's never-ending grind. With their season on hold, MLB players have instead been doing everything they can to show their love and support for those who pack the stadiums to cheer them on.
Athletes have been doing everything from sending massive donations to transmitting endearing messages of support. And we'll never have too much of it.
