Yankees Have a Golden Chance to End the Red Sox Season This Weekend
By Jerry Trotta
The streaking New York Yankees seem poised to hoist their first AL East crown since 2012 when the season concludes in a few month's time. At the very least, with 10 and 11-game leads over the Rays and the Red Sox (12 in the loss column), they have a comfortable safety net heading into eight games in just over a week with the Sox.
What could make the ensuing feat all the more delicious, however, is if the Pinstripes themselves were able to firmly squash Boston's postseason aspirations.
And the Bombers just so happen to have that rare opportunity this weekend with a four-game series against the defending champs starting on Thursday.
If Aaron Boone's club manages to sweep the Red Sox, or at least take three of four, Alex Cora's men could see themselves nearly eight games back in the tightly-contested AL Wild Card race (they're currently a pair of games out of the second spot).
All reports have suggested that Boston is on the fence about whether to buy or sell before the July 31 deadline, and the Yanks are perfectly positioned to present them with all the answers.
Just ponder the sheer euphoria that the Bronx would feel if their organization singlehandedly dismantled the Red Sox year, especially given their World Series title, "Do Damage" mantra, and "Suck on it" bravado from a season ago.
With a positive showing this weekend, New York could swiftly neutralize any lasting and lingering bitterness of Boston's triumph and have 2019 be remembered as the campaign the Yanks sent the Sox packing. And if it doesn't go so well? Four more games next weekend.
