Yankees Hiring Rachel Balkovec as Full-Time Minor-League Hitting Coach
By Sean Facey
The New York Yankees are set to make history with their latest coaching hire.
Thirty-two-year-old Rachel Balkovec has signed a contract with the team and will become one of the first full-time female coaches to work for a major league organization.
Balkovec will serve as a hitting coach across multiple levels throughout the organization, calling upon her experience as a softball player at both Creighton University and the University of New Mexico.
It's a fantastic moment for the baseball world that marks a progressive move towards a more inclusive future. The Cubs made a similar move on Friday.
This isn't the first time Balkovec's worked with an MLB team, though. She first broke onto the scene by serving as a strength and conditioning coach back in 2012 with the St. Louis Cardinals.
She most recently served in a similar role with the Houston Astros' Double-A affiliate, the Corpus Christi Hooks.
Now, though, Balkovec will get to be a part of one of the most successful and well-known organizations in all of sports. Hopefully, her trail-blazing efforts will open the door for more women looking to work in professional baseball.
