Yankees Reportedly Interested in Trading for Mets' Steven Matz After Multiple Key Rotation Injuries
By Mark Powell
With the Yankees in desperate need of pitching amid a rash of injuries to James Paxton and Luis Severino, they could look to their crosstown rivals for help.
The Yanks are reportedly interested in trading for Mets lefty Steven Matz, a move that could make New York's rotation lefty-heavy heading into the season, with JA Happ and presumed depth starter Jordan Montgomery already filling the southpaw role.
The 28-year-old Matz finished 2019 with a respectable 11-10 mark paired with a 4.21 ERA. While not electrifying, Matz is a stable middle-of-the-rotation starter -- something the Mets have plenty of after an offseason in which they added Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha. That surplus gives the Mets the right to look for trade partners in hopes of building up their prospect base.
Yankee fans shouldn't get their hopes up just yet, though.
Despite the Yankees' injury woes, which have followed Aaron Boone's team throughout the 2019 campaign and into 2020 Spring Training, the Bronx Bombers remain the favorites in a top-heavy American League.
The addition of Matz, or any pitcher of his caliber, would help the Yanks avoid early-season pitching struggles while Paxton recovers by mid-May to early June.
