4 Legendary Mariano Rivera Saves Yankee Fans Need to Relive During Delayed MLB Season
By Jack Murphy
With the MLB season suspended, it's allowed fans to re-visit some of baseball's greatest moments. A man who was no stranger to making history is the all-time saves leader and New York Yankees legend Mariano Rivera. Rivera recorded a total of 694 saves between the regular season and the playoffs. So, let's look back on four of his very best to get you pumped up.
4. 1999 World Series Game 4
The Yankees were looking to sweep the Atlanta Braves in 1999 after they went up 3-0 in the series. Rivera was brought in to get the final out in the eighth inning of a 4-1 ballgame and delivered. He then returned to the field for the bottom of the ninth with the opportunity to seal the series. After getting into some early trouble allowing two runners on base, Rivera kept his cool by striking out the next batter, followed by a fly out to left. Yankee Stadium went wild and rightfully so.
3. 2000 World Series Game 5
The New York Yankees faced the New York Mets in the 2000 World Series, better known as the Subway Series. After the Yankees tacked on two runs to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the ninth, they called on Mo to end the series. With two outs and a runner on third in the ninth, RIvera faced off against the Mets best slugger Mike Piazza, who hit a deep fly ball in center field that was caught by Bernie Williams, sealing the Yankees third consecutive World Series win and 26th in franchise history.
2. 1998 World Series Game 4
In the historic 1998 World Series, the Yankees faced off against the San Diego Padres. This was Rivera's first World Series as the closer for the Yanks, as he recorded a total of three saves in the Fall Classic. The most iconic of course was the one where he recorded the out to capture the title for NY. In typical Rivera fashion, he runs a cutter in on the hands of a lefty batter resulting in a ground out to third baseman Scott Brosius. It marked the first of three consecutive championships for the club.
1. Save No. 602
Rivera became the all-time saves leader in 2011 after a contest with the Minnesota Twins. Rivera recorded his 602nd save of his legendary career passing long-time San Diego Padre Trevor Hoffman for the most ever. Michael Kay's call of the moment could not have been more perfect, "The greatest closer in history, now has the most saves in history." Mo was not yet done as he went on to record a total of 652 regular season saves before he retired after the 2013 campaign. Mo's spot at top of the saves list should be secured for a long time.
