Luis Severino to Start Tuesday vs Angels for Yankees Season Debut
By Jerry Trotta
After almost a regular season's worth of recovery and rehab, the time has come, Yankees fans.
Luis Severino, currently dominating across New York's minor league ranks, will reportedly join the Pinstripes this weekend in Toronto, and the plan is for him to make his 2019 debut on Tuesday versus the Angels at the Stadium.
Talk about timing, right? It remains to be seen what sort of pitch count the two-time All-Star will be on, but the fact that he's seemingly ready to go with just over two weeks left until the postseason should have the entirety of the Bronx erupting in sheer euphoria, even if it's on a 70-pitch threshold.
In his third rehab appearance on Wednesday, Sevy allowed just one run on five hits while striking out four in 3.2 innings of work, let down by minor league defense (an out at the plate was dropped, and the inning spiraled). He was consistently clocking 97 MPH with his fastball on the radar gun and reached his 60-65-pitch limit (64) without a setback or discomfort.
Earlier in the year, Aaron Boone hinted at the possibility of the 25-year-old hurler coming out of the pen for the Pinstripes in the playoffs. However, that 65-pitch range should be more than enough to get the Yanks through four or five innings before they hand it over to their world-beating bullpen.
He's back, folks, and the Yanks just became THAT much more dangerous and lethal.
