Yankees Make Fans Furious by Calling Jonathan Holder Back to Bigs
By Parker White
Following Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies where they used several relief options after James Paxton was knocked out early, the New York Yankees optioned left-handed pitcher Stephen Tarpley.
To fill that roster spot, the Yankees recalled right-handed pitcher Jonathan Holder from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
New York needed a fresh arm in the bullpen, so you understand the move, but bringing Holder back isn't encouraging. In seven appearances at Triple-A, Holder owns a 3.48 ERA and .293 opponents batting average over 10.1 innings.
Holder has also blown a save and has given up more than one hit per inning. Not the kind of results you are a looking for from a big league arm against Triple-A competition.
Another reason why Yankee fans don't have a lot of confidence in Holder is what he produced before being sent down. In 31 appearances, Holder posted a 6.81 ERA and 1.43 WHIP, allowing 27 earned runs on 40 hits (eight home runs) in 35.2 innings of work.
That's simply not good enough, especially in a crowded Yankees bullpen which ought to produce better talent even from middle-inning eaters.
