Yankees Make Roster Moves Ahead of 60-Day Injured List Deadline
By Parker White
The deadline to activate players from the 60-day injured list is coming up, so the New York Yankees made some roster moves on Monday to account for it.
New York reinstated third baseman Miguel Andujar, first baseman Greg Bird, outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury and right-handed pitcher Jonathan Holder from the 60-day IL.
They also reinstated right-handed pitcher Jake Barrett from the 60-day IL and assigned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Left-handed pitcher Tylor Lyons, who made New York's playoff roster as an emergency southpaw, has elected free agency instead of accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A.
Now that Andujar, Bird and Ellsbury are off the 60-day IL, the Yankees have some decisions to make as far as their plans for them in 2020.
Andujar is coming off a torn labrum which required season-ending surgery after featuring in just 12 games in 2019. Gio Urshela starred at the hot corner in his stead, so there's a good chance Andujar could be relegated to a bench role in 2020.
As for Bird, he's dealt with a plethora of injuries throughout his young career. He's featured in 186 games for the Yankees across four seasons, but only managed 10 games in 2019.
And then of course, there's Ellsbury, who hasn't played in the big leagues since 2017. And with his gargantuan contract and injury history, there likely isn't a team dumb enough to acquire him.
