Yankees Move Giancarlo Stanton to 60-Day IL and Add 2 Pitchers in Big Roster Shuffle
By Jerry Trotta
When it rains, it pours, and right now, the Yankees just can't seem to escape the injury bug, even though their playoff positioning seems fairly stable.
Just a few short days after Aaron Boone revealed that Giancarlo Stanton resumed light baseball activity, the organization made the procedural move to transfer the former NL MVP to the 60-Day injured list. This ensures that the slugging outfielder will not be able to come off the IL until Aug. 25 at the earliest, though he wasn't expected to arrive until September regardless.
In addition, the Bombers placed left-hander Stephen Tarpley on the 10-Day IL with what the club originally described as a "left shoulder impingement" before correcting themselves, and assigning the injury to the elbow.
This marks the second time in a week the Yanks have extended someone in a relief role (first, it was Jonathan Holder) only to watch them later land on the IL.
Of course, these weren't the only roster moves the Pinstripes were up to on Sunday morning. The Stanton procedural move cleared the way for the franchise to announce that they've signed southpaw Joe Mantiply and right-hander Brady Lail to major league contracts. Both hurlers will report to the club's 25-man roster from Triple-A Scranton for Sunday's series finale against the Blue Jays, in an effort to help out a team desperate for arms (and with a doubleheader on the way Monday).
Despite the 60-Day shuffle, a September run and postseason cameo still remains in the cards for Giancarlo. Don't fret.
