Yankees Officially Place Miguel Andujar on IL and Recall Nestor Cortes
By Jerry Trotta
Miguel Andujar hasn't been anything close to the guy we saw break out during the 2018 campaign since he returned from his lingering shoulder injury just a few weeks ago.
Earlier today, reporting broke that the New York Yankees were planning on placing the 24-year-old slugger back on the injured list, and we now have confirmation that this is the case.
On Monday evening, the club announced that Andujar will hit the 10-day IL, with left-hander Nestor Cortes Jr. gettinbg a call-up in a corresponding move.
Last year's American League Rookie of the Year runner-up has gone 3-for-34 since returning from a torn labrum in his right shoulder, and the Yanks believe that his struggles are a product of the shoulder not yet being fully healthy.
Manager Aaron Boone released the following statement explaining the decision:
"We do feel feel like the injury is certainly a contributing factor to some of the struggles. The IL is something we might do real quickly and just give it a little timeout to declare itself a little bit more and reevaluate it.”
When Adujar originally suffered the injury, there was genuine concern around the organization that the third baseman could need season-ending surgery. After rehab, however, the Yanks were convinced that he was well enough to continue playing.
What Boone and Co. decide to do with Miguel from here on out will be analyzed to no end. Judging from his poor run of form, the club should absolutely think twice about rushing Andujar back this time around.
