Predicting Yankees Opening Day Lineup After Giancarlo Stanton Injury
The New York Yankees were already dealing with the reality that Luis Severino will miss the entire 2019 season with Tommy John surgery. Could it get worse? Yes, yes it can.
Then came the news Wednesday that Giancarlo Stanton suffered a calf injury that will likely keep him out to start the regular season.
That is awful news for the Yankees and now manager Aaron Boone has to construct a new lineup for Opening Day.
Projected Yankees Lineup Without Giancarlo Stanton
DJ LeMahieu, 2B
Aaron Judge, RF
Gleyber Torres, SS
Gary Sanchez, C
Luke Voit, 1B
Miguel Andujar, DH
Giovanny Urshela, 3B
Mike Tauchman, LF
Brett Gardner, CF
The Yankees keep the top three spots the same without Stanton. The changes come after that as Gary Sanchez can get his power in the cleanup spot, followed by Luke Voit.
Miguel Andujar would be higher than sixth if not for an injury-riddled 2019. He is a top candidate to move up in the order if he is anywhere lower than fifth to start the year.
Giovanny Urshela being seventh is nothing too controversial. He saw his offense improve with a line of .314/.355/.534 in 2019 in what was a turnaround year for his career. Following Urshela is Tauchman, who appears to get the starting nod over Clint Frazier at this point in time.
Brett Gardner rounds it all out to add an experienced veteran at the bottom spot in the lineup. Boone will have to get creative and could decide to shake things up often to find the best combination.
