Yankees Option LHP Stephen Tarpley to Triple-A Scranton
By Brendan Azoff
After picking up his first career save on Sunday against Cleveland when he came up big in the 10th inning for the Yankees, left-hander Stephen Tarpley has been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Tuesday night's loss against the Mets.
With the injury to Domingo German, the Yankees will need to fill Sunday's rotation slot somehow. It could be Chad Green the Opener once more, or it may yet be another option, promoted in Tarpley's stead. Even Chance Adams, Tuesday's 26th man for the doubleheader, could return, seeing as he was an additional helping hand this week, not an official promotion/demotion.
Tarpley has an 8.53 ERA in the majors this season, but has shown a lot of improvement as of late, pitching well in his last few appearances. The Yankees have had a revolving door between their Triple-A squad and the big club, as injuries have plagued the lineup and the pitching staff.
The Yankees have managed to stay afloat despite these injuries, and performances from young pitchers like these two are a big reason why. Tarpley can use the longer reps in Triple-A to perfect his pitches for the inevitable next opportunity with the Yankees.
