The Yankees Owned the Cardinals in the Luke Voit Trade and There's No Doubt About it
By Michael Luciano

The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the best teams in the MLB at fleecing teams in trade deadline deals, but they themselves were robbed by the New York Yankees back in 2018.
The Yankees pilfered power-hitting first baseman Luke Voit away from the Cardinals, and all it took to get him were two relievers in Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos.
The New York Yankees tonight announced that they have acquired right-handed hitting 1B Luke Voit and international signing bonus pool money from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for LHP Chasen Shreve and RHP Giovanny Gallegos.

While Gallegos was extremely impressive last year given his 2.31 ERA, the hole at first base that the Cardinals filled by trading for Paul Goldschmidt could have been avoided had they simply kept Voit.
Voit has played 157 games as a Yankee, and his 35 home runs and 95 RBIs are the numbers of a truly elite offensive first baseman. That's not too bad for a player who most didn't think had enough chops at the plate to supplant Greg Bird at first base.

If the Cardinals had kept the Missouri native, they wouldn't have had to trade for Goldschmidt and could have added another superstar while keeping first base intact. We're sure that's worth a lot more than a setup guy in Gallegos.
