Yankees Place Luke Voit and David Hale on 10-Day IL in Latest Roster Shuffle
By Mark Powell
As pressure mounts on the New York Yankees to make a move at the trade deadline, they have some internal issues they also need to deal with.
Slugger Luke Voit has been one of the best stories in baseball since he was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018. In Tuesday's loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, though, Voit left the game after taking an awkward swing in what looked to be an oblique issue. According to the Yankees, Voit is dealing with a sports hernia and will be placed on the 10-day IL. However, he isn't alone.
Reliever David Hale will join Voit on the injured list with a lumbar spine strain, which should be a prevailing concern moving forward. Hale's been extraordinarily effective this season in the Bombers' bullpen, putting up a 2.89 ERA and giving up just 12 runs in over 37 innings pitched.
His likely replacement, Jonathan Holder, has been the exact opposite, although he's seen relative success in the minors of late.
Valera is a 27-year-old infielder who's seen very little time in the bigs this season, registering just three at-bats with the Yankees in a July start against the Rays.
Health is imperative moving forward for New York, as even with their division cushion they don't want to lose sight of home-field advantage.
