The Yankees bullpen depth just got even thinner with the latest injury to a right-handed reliever. Relief pitcher Jonathan Holder was placed on the IL with right shoulder inflammation on Saturday.

As a result of the move, the Yankees recalled left-hander Stephen Tarpley from Triple-A to take Holder's roster spot.

Holder's season has not gone the way he would hope, as his 6.31 ERA and -0.9 WAR on the season suggest he's struggled in the just over 41 innings pitched this year.

Holder was a 2014 sixth-round selection of the Yankees and made his debut in September of 2016. The righty had his best season in 2018 when he posted a 3.14 ERA in 60 games for New York.

Tarpley hasn't done any better in his MLB appearances this year, albeit in a much smaller sample size. The young pitcher has an 8.31 ERA and -0.6 WAR in 15 games with the big league team. He made his MLB debut last year, and has sporadically been called up this season.

The Yankees are hoping to survive this stretch until their major contributors return. All-Star catcher Gary Sanchez was just activated from the IL, while Giancarlo Stantion, Luis Severino and Dellin Betances are all scheduled to return late in the year, giving the Yankees a boost for the final stretch.

The AL leading Bronx Bombers need to survive this stretch of baseball before reinforcements arrive.
