3 Yankees Who Have Dominated Spring Training So Far
By Michael Luciano
While several key Yankees have yet to take the field at Spring Training -- and some who have played have unfortunately disappointed -- there are still plenty of positives that one could take from the first few weeks of preseason baseball in Tampa. In particular, these three Bronx Bombers have either helped solidify themselves a spot on the big league roster or have set the stage for what should be an excellent 2020 season.
3. OF Rosell Herrera
Herrera is a utility player that has bounced around the bigs over the last few years. Originally a non-roster invite to Spring Training, he might just challenge Tyler Wade for the utility/26th man role with the club. Herrera is 9-16 this spring, good for a sensational .563 average, and he's got three doubles and a triple among those nine hits. Herrera has been white-hot this spring, and he has shown no signs of slowing down.
2. LHP J.A. Happ
Injuries to Luis Severino and James Paxton inadvertently forced Happ into the No. 3 starter role, and he had taken to that role with aplomb in the spring. Happ has given up just one run in nine innings of work, surrendering only four hits while striking out 11. If he pitches like this all season long, the pain of losing Severino would be greatly reduced.
1. RHP Jonathan Loaisiga
"Johnny Lasagna" has polished off five innings of work this spring, and he has yet to surrender a single base runner. Loaisiga's nine strikeouts are a testament to his ridiculous stuff, as his blazing fastball and sharp, breaking curveball could be a fearsome combination if harnessed properly. He is could be in the driver's seat for the No. 5 starter job, and Yankees fans should be hoping that he ends up winning that spot.
