Yankees Projected Opening Day Outfield Without Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton
By Jerry Trotta
For the second consecutive year, Aaron Boone and the New York Yankees have been tasked with the burden of managing around a rash of injuries to star players before the start of the season.
General manager Brian Cashman told reporters on Tuesday that corner outfielders Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton likely won't be featured in the team's Opening Day lineup against the Baltimore Orioles later this month.
As that news veers towards official status, let's dive into an analysis of what the Yankees' starting outfield might look like on March 28.
Yankees Projected Opening Day Lineup
DJ LeMahieu, 2B
Brett Gardner, CF
Gleyber Torres, SS
Luke Voit, 1B
Gary Sanchez, C
Miguel Andujar, DH
Mike Tauchman, RF
Clint Frazier, LF
Gio Urshela, 3B
Yankees fans should prepare to see something like this on Opening Day. The injuries to Judge and Stanton open a path for the likes of Tauchman and Frazier into the lineup. The rest of the bunch, maybe excluding Andujar, were pretty much penciled into Boone's lineup card upon touching down in Tampa for Spring Training.
Tauchman has been taking reps in center field this Spring, but we fully anticipate that Boone will deploy Gardner out there because of his experience at the position. Gardy has played over 540 games in CF over his career, whereas Tauchman has played just 22.
As for Frazier, the time is now for the young outfielder to make it known to Boone that he deserves to remain in the big leagues all season. The 25-year-old slugger will undoubtedly have chance to do just that for as long as Judge and Stanton are shelved. For his sake, let's hope he can be as consistent in the field as he is at the plate.
