Yankees Reportedly Backed Out of Ken Giles Deadline Trade at Last Minute
By Chris Russo
The New York Yankees shockingly decided to stand pat at the trade deadline, holding onto their assets rather than trying to bolster their pitching.
Well, it looks Brian Cashman and Co. were extremely close to adding another top-tier bullpen arm. The Yankees were apparently going to trade three minor leaguers to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for closer Ken Giles, per Ken Rosenthal.
Giles was dealing with an elbow injury around the time of the deadline and the questions into his health caused the Yankees to back out.
While Giles would have been a solid addition, as teams can never have too many talented relievers, the Yankees have a more dire need in their rotation, as they are lacking in terms of quality starters.
Domingo German has exceeded everyone's expectations by winning 17 games, but he joins every other Yankee starter with a 4+ ERA. Meanwhile ace Luis Severino has not pitched at all this year and, though his rehab is progressing, it is still uncertain what his role will be in the postseason.
After being banished from the Astros and sent to Toronto following an altercation with manager A.J. Hinch last year, Giles has rediscovered his form with the Jays. He owns a 2.05 ERA with 73 strikeouts across 44 innings of work, racking up 18 saves.
It's easy to see why New York had their sights on Giles, but the unfortunate timing of his injury prevented a deal from occurring.
