Yankees Set MLB Record for Most Injured Players in a Season After Gio Urshela Was Sent to IL
By Parker White
In what has seemingly been the case all season, the New York Yankees placed third baseman Gio Urshela on the injured list while simultaneously taking first baseman Luke Voit off the shelf.
Take one off, put one on.
With the news on Friday, the Yankees made history and set a new MLB record, as Urshela is the 29th different Yankee to be placed on the injured list this year. The 2016 Los Angeles Dodgers were the previous record holder with 28 different players landing on the shelf in 2016.
Urshela may have been the 29th different player to land on the IL, but the Yankees have used the injured list 36 separate times, which, before now, was unfathomable.
These players have lost out on a total of 2,246 combined games to be exact, and we still have a month left in the season with several players still out. The next closest team are the San Diego Padres, who have 1,653 games lost.
The funniest thing about this is the fact the Yankees have the best record in baseball at 88-47 heading into Friday. For most teams, this amount of injuries would be a death sentence, but the Yankees have rallied around it and are still the favorites to win the whole thing.
